Abstract
The development of a single bubble foaming model for describing the viscoelastic nature of the gas-laden polymer melt during the expansion of amorphous and semi-crystalline thermoplastic foams with physical blowing agents is reported. This model, which takes into account the effects of strain hardening and flow-induced crystallisation of semi-crystalline thermoplastics, is applied to two isotactic polypropylenes and reveals the complex non-linearity of foam expansion. 22 refs.

Abstract
The application of DMA for aiding in the provision of an understanding of the properties of foams and in the selection of foams for a particular application is demonstrated using several examples. These examples relate to studies into the effect of chemical composition on the dynamic mechanical response of ethylene polymers, the effect of open or closed cell content of LDPE and the effect of different foam characteristics, such as density, cell structure and matrix polymer morphology on the dynamic properties of LDPE and an evaluation of the damping characteristics of polyolefin foam blends. 23 refs.
