Abstract
The effect of skin thickness on the mechanical properties of closed-cell HDPE structural foams was investigated by means of three-point bending, uniaxial tension and torsion rectangular measurements. The elastic moduli of the foams were compared with those obtained using various models and the best models for calculating flexural modulus, tensile modulus and shear modulus of the foams identified. 29 refs.

Abstract
Microcellular PP/wood fibre composites were prepared either by extrusion or injection moulding using three different blowing agents (exothermic, endothermic and endo/exothermic). The effects of the type of blowing agent, blowing agent content and coupling agent (maleic anhydride-propylene copolymer) on the physicomechanical properties of the foamed composites were investigated and a comparison made of the properties of the foams prepared by the different processes. 19 refs. Abstract
The performance of calcium carbonate chemically treated to increase dispersivity and lower density, as a nucleating agent, in PP was evaluated. Compounding was performed in a counter-rotating twin-screw extruder and a single-screw extruder and calcium carbonate processability was determined by comparing particle sizes thereof before and after compounding using scanning electron microscopy. The effect of calcium carbonate on cell morphology was also investigated in terms of cell size and number of cells in a unit area and as a function of weight reduction using samples produced by injection moulding. 13 refs.
