Abstract
An evaluation was made of various energy absorbing materials (foams, honeycombs and balsa) for vehicle interiors. The quasi-static uniaxial compression behaviour of these materials was determined and the most promising materials from the compression testing selected for quasi-static shear tests. Finally, three materials were chosen for dynamic uniaxial compression testing using a weight balanced drop rig. Particularly good results were obtained for Rohacell 311G. 26 refs.

Abstract
Precursor particles with different particle sizes were produced from polyamic acid and the transformation of the particles into polyimide microstructures recorded using a stereo microscopy. The morphological properties of the precursor particles and mesostructures obtained by heat treatment of the precursor particles were analysed and the volatile evolution behaviour of the particles during heat treatment examined. Transitions occurring during the blowing process were analysed by means of TGA and modulated DSC and the effects of particle size and shape on bubble growth evaluated. 12 refs.
