Abstract
Work conducted by EUROPUR (European Association of Flexible Polyurethane Foam Block Manufacturers) for the identification of odours emanating from polyurethane flexible foam mattresses, including the sensory and chemical evaluation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at low concentration levels is reported. The results of thermal desorption of Tenax tubes with cryogenic trapping of volatiles and analysis by a combination of GC-MS and olfactometry are discussed in terms of the determination of the components of the complex mixture of VOCs that are primarily responsible for the perceived odour. 19 refs.

Abstract
The synthesis of rigid polyurethane foams based on polyether polyol, polyester polyol or hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene, with polymeric methane diphenyl diisocyanate, glycerol as crosslinking agent, 1,4-butanediol as chain extender, N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as catalyst, poly(ether dimethylsiloxane) as surfactant and water, HCFC-141b or n-pentane as blowing agent was investigated. The products were characterised by apparent density, compression strength, compression modulus, morphology (SEM), water absorption, thermal conductivity, glass transition temperature (DSC) and thermal stability (TGA), and the effects of chain extender, polyol and blowing agent on mechanical, morphological and thermal properties of the foams are discussed. 22 refs.
