Abstract
The development and production is described of free-flowing rubber/filler composite systems, with the emphasis on emulsion SBR/carbon black or NR/carbon black. The aim of the developmental work was to offer users a free-flowing, non-tacky, highly dispersive form of rubber and filler, which facilitated the extension of current production processes in the tyre industry compared to current technology which is based on the discontinuous mixing of rubber in bale form with granulated fillers. Continuous compounding extruder process require a free-flowing form of rubber for the automatic metering and feeding of the mixer.12 refs. Abstract
Research carried out at Poliplastik is reported with reference to the creation of thermoplastic composites based on large-tonnage polymers for use in mass production of engineering articles. The main body of research is concerned with the effective control of properties of composites based on PP, nylon 6 and nylon 66, and PBTP. The main properties to be controlled include thermal stability, elastic strength, and impact strength. The effect of various fillers on these properties is examined in terms of reinforcement and modification. (Article translated from Plasticheskie Massy, No.6, 2001, pp.6).

Abstract
The development of thermoplastic composites for use in engineering and constructional applications is discussed with reference to development work carried out at Poliplastik. None of the widely used thermoplastics, (PP, nylon-6, nylon-6,6 and PBTP) are suitable for such applications due mainly, to concerns relating to heat distortion temperature and modulus. The reinforcement of thermoplastics with fibre fillers, (glass, carbon) to produce engineering plastics with high mechanical properties is subject to the solution of a number of technical engineering problems, which stem from the theory of reinforcement by dispersed fibres, in particular, the Kelly-Tyson equation for the strength of composites with unidirectional fibres. The achievement of effective reinforcement, determined by the adhesion at the polymer/filler boundary and the fibre lengths is examined, as preconditions for the chemical interaction with the filler surface and technological provision of the optimum distribution of fibre lengths in the composites. 3 refs. Abstract
Modification of aliphatic polyamides by combination with other thermoplastics and elastomers to improve impact strength, chemical resistance and low temperature properties, is discussed. The investigation was carried out on nylon 6 and a series of polymers with reactive groups: ethylene-propylene rubbers, butadiene-acrylonitrile rubbers, and copolymers of ethylene and vinyl acetate. In a number of cases, for comparison, use was made of composites of nylon-6 with analogous polymers without functional groups. Mechanical properties were investigated in accordance with GOST on standard injection moulded specimens and thermophysical properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry. In the examined system, interaction of the polymers owing to the presence of functional groups proceeds as a process of grafting of the dispersed phase to the nylon-6 matrix. 7 refs.(Article translated from Plasticheskie Massy, No.6, 2001, pp.14-6).

Abstract
The porous structure is studied of glass filled nylon 6 composites, filled with both long and short fibres. Use was made of mercury porosimetry techniques and related software to determine pore volume, pore area, and the differential radius distribution of the pore volume, pore area and pore number. Investigations establish that the formation of pore structure is influenced considerably both by processing and by service factors. Glass filled polyamides filled by the extrusion method and containing modifying additives to promote the formation of the most equilibrium supermolecular structure of the polyamide at the stage of processing by injection moulding, is recommended. 14 refs. Abstract
Composites of glass fibre filled nylon 6 were studied with reference to the distribution of in the final specimen of both solid and in particular, liquid additives which are incompatible with the polymer matrix. Such multi-component compositions contain reinforcing and dispersion fillers and a number of functional organic additives, some of which are in the state of low-viscosity liquids at the processing temperatures. During filling of a compression mould, a significant temperature gradient is observed, which affects the distribution of each of the components over the surface of the specimen. Investigations were conducted to determine the nature of the distribution of the components, not only over the surface, but also through the thickness of the specimen. The surface properties were investigated of four glass filled composites based on nylon 6 and additionally containing a solid mineral filler, an elastomer additive, and an organosilicon modifier. 3 refs. Abstract
The physicomechanical properties of polypropylene are determined largely by the relaxation effects associated with unfreezing of the mobility of structural elements during heating. The use of reinforcing fillers in polypropylene composites can suppress relaxation and stabilise the properties of plastic articles in the service temperature range of the articles. In order to study the relaxation effects of the mechanical and dielectric properties of polypropylene and composites based on it, a systematic study was made of the dielectric and dynamic mechanical properties of injection moulded specimens containing glass fibre or talc. Changes in relaxation process after filling are noted. The introduction of reinforcing fillers is shown to markedly increase the elastic modulus and its retention at elevated temperatures. 7 refs. Abstract
The mechanism of thermal oxidation is discussed with reference to aromatic heterochain polymers, (AHPs). A review is presented of work carried out over the past 15 years at the Scientific Research Institute for Plastics and the Poliplastik Scientific and Production Enterprise on the ageing and stabilisation of AHPs. Features of high temperature (300-400 degrees C) oxidation in the melt and of solid-phase (150-250 degrees C) oxidation of AHPs were examined, and possible ways of stabilising AHPs by means of phosphorous-containing additives and/or compounds of variable-valency metals are examined. 43 refs. Abstract
Liquid crystalline copolyesters, (LCPs) based on dioxydiphenyl diacetate and acetoxybenzoic and iso- and terephthalic acids with different contents of the initial monomers were used as modifiers for a range of engineering thermoplastics. Their influence on the properties of polyesterimide, aliphatic-aromatic polyamide, and polyimide, aromatic polysulphones and also polysulphone/polyarylate blends was studied. It was shown that small additions of LCPs lower the melt viscosity of thermoplastics, and varying effects were noted for amorphous and crystallising polymers. 11 refs. Abstract
A computer aided technique for the design of organic active additives for PVC is described. The method proposed refers to the analysis of the relationship structure vs. property of organic substances used as additives for polymer compositions based on PVC. The study uses the idea of the virtual space of chemical compounds, the basis of which is that organic compounds showing a particular activity in a polymer composite, form more or less compact clusters in some n-dimensional space. The coordinate axes of such a space can represent the physicochemical, mechanical and other parameters in respect of the known ideas or the fundamental values of he properties of the molecule. Fuzzy methods of classification are employed for the classification which then uses a statistical sample of the appropriate organic compound from the total number available. Within such a framework, catalogues were devised of statistics of descriptors according to the classes of compounds, on the basis of which, a method of prognosis was developed. The current research uses descriptors contained in existing catalogues of the following types: structural descriptors, length descriptors, conjugation descriptors which are used in the design process. 5 refs. Abstract
The modification of wood flour for use in wood polymer composites is studied with the aim of developing a method of modification envisaging the chemical change of the surface and a complex improvement in the properties of the wood materials. The reactive modifier selected was oligoethoxysiloxane or ethylsilicate-40 (ES-40). The polymer component consisted of polypropylene, polyisobutylene, and butyl rubber. Transesterification of the ES-40 by alcohols and modification of the wood flour using the ES-40 were carried out by mixing the components and subsequent heating in a stream of nitrogen or in air, and the liquid products of transesterification of ES-40 were characterised in terms of their solubility, the molecular mass values, and IR spectra. Typical properties of the initial and modified powders of wood flour were also determined, and the properties of the resultant composite are described. 13 refs.(Article translated from Plasticheskie Massy, No.7, 2001, pp.39).
