Abstract
The principles of gas permeability measurement and photoacoustic and photothermal methods of measurement are outlined together with the methods employed to numerically model the passage of gas. Newly developed photoacoustic and photothermal systems for measuring the gas permeability of polymers are described and applied to the determination of the gas permeability of peroxide-cured hydrogenated nitrile rubber and sulphur-vulcanised polychloroprene/polybutadiene blends. 4 refs. Abstract
The adhesion between epoxy resin and PVC printed with various inks was investigated using a specially developed sessile drop method to determine equilibrium wetting angles. Surface tension of the epoxy resin was determined using the Wilhelmi glass plate method and a phenomenological model derived for relating the physical effects occurring at the interface with microparameters describing paired molecular interactions. 6 refs. Abstract
An investigation was carried out into the relationship between the composition of composites based on an epoxy resin cured with polyethylene polyamines and filled with copper and nickel and the dynamics of swelling of the composites in corrosive media (aqueous solutions of hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and sodium hydroxide). Reversible and irreversible changes occurring in the structure of the composites under the action of alkaline and acidic media were followed and the effects of cure temperature and filler volume fraction on the swelling behaviour of the composites examined. 16 refs. Abstract
The results are reported of a study of the structure of alpha-substituted acrylates carried out using proton NMR spectroscopy, Carbon-13 NMR spectroscopy and quantum chemical analysis. Values of q and delta for atoms C1 and C2 in molecules, ionisation potentials, dipole moments, enthalpies of formation and Weinberg constants are tabulated. 10 refs. Abstract
Latices based on vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymers were modified using polymeric complexes of sorbic acid as antimicrobial additives and controllers of volume/surface properties and the effect of the complexes on the properties, particularly antimicrobial activity of the latices and coatings made therefrom investigated. It was found that latices and coatings containing polyvinyl pyrrolidone complexes of optimised composition possessed prolonged antimicrobial activity, which was retained even on paper and food surfaces. 5 refs. Abstract
Moisture diffusion in basalt-reinforced epoxy resin composites intended for the manufacture of hot and cold water pipes was investigated by means of gravimetry and layer-by-layer determination of moisture concentration. The results are discussed in terms of kinetics of sorption, sorption and desorption isotherms, temperature dependence of diffusion coefficients and concentration dependence of diffusion coefficients. 4 refs. Abstract
The kinetics of thermooxidative degradation of polychloroprene (Nairit KR-50) containing the condensation product of Gossypol resin with amines as heat stabiliser and the physicomechanical properties of the stabilised rubber were investigated and comparisons made with polychloroprene stabilised with phenyl-b-naphthylamine. The effect of heat stabiliser content on the induction period and weight loss of the polychloroprene during thermooxidative degradation was examined and the tensile properties of the vulcanisates after heat ageing in air at 100 degrees C for 48 h tabulated. 2 refs.(Article translated from Plasticheskie Massy, No.11, 2006, p.40-42)

Abstract
The effectiveness of glycerin acid compounds as lubricants in rigid PVC composites containing tribasic lead sulphate, calcium stearate and titanium dioxide was evaluated and compared with that of an imported lubricant, Loxiol GH-4. The glycerin acid compounds were found to be effective mechanochemical stabilisers/lubricants for PVC and capable of reducing considerably the dehydrochlorination rate of the PVC, thereby fulfilling the role of heat stabiliser. 6 refs. Abstract
Polyolefin-based composites were processed by hot and cold pressing and extrusion and the effect of the processing method on the electrical properties of the composites investigated. Tests were conducted on high molec.wt. PE, ultra high molecular weight PE, LDPE and a rubber mix of grade V-14 and conductive filler (KL-1 coke). Maximum electrical conductivity was achieved by pre-pressing a filler blend, grinding and introducing a rubber compound during milling. Carbon-containing composites based on an elastomer and ultra high molecular weight PE produced by extrusion were considered suitable for self-regulating heating cables. 4 refs.
