Abstract
The effects of the low-boiling liquids 1-chloro-1,1-difluoroethane (HCFC 141b) or 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane (HCFC 142b) and gases (carbon dioxide) on the properties of polymer composites were examined by differential thermal analysis. The curve for the LDPE/CO"2 system showed an endothermic effect at 355 K as a result of the penetration of CO"2 into the intercrystalline space of PE, and a distinct melting peak at 368 K. R142b and R141b also reduced the melting temperature of PE to 364 K and 362 K, respectively. At high temperatures and pressures, all three blowing agents are solvents for the polymer; R141b is a more effective solvent than R142b or CO"2. 5 refs.

Abstract
Physical aspects of the modification of polymer-based composites by nanosized filler particles were examined by means of mathematical model. The models permit the elucidation of the modifying action of nanoparticulate dopants. The models were partially verified for the case of toping by mica. The model for the modifying action of nanosized dopants on polymer matrices permits the proposal of the mechanism for the formation of functional nanocomposites, and the development of criteria for the selection of nanomodifiers in the development of materials with specified characteristics. 12 refs.

Abstract
The effects were examined of various conditions of oxidation by ammonium persulphate in aqueous ammonia under cavitation condition on the yield and properties of nitrogen-containing derivatives from a lignohydrocarbon material (pinewood). Derivatives containing 1.2-4.3% of fixed nitrogen and up to 6.8% of carboxyl groups were obtained. The extent of delignification of the pinewood increased with increasing duration of the cavitation treatment and the concentration of ammonium persulphate in the aqueous ammonia medium. The oxyammonolysis products had a high sorption capacity for copper and zinc ions, and can be used as a nitrogen-containing ion exchanger. 9 refs.

Abstract
The effects of added benzoyl peroxide (BP) and N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA) on the properties of composites with a matrix based on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were examined. The magnitude of the limiting compressive stress causing failure, and the time to 99% of this value were determined. There is a range of BP/DMA molar ratios within which the limiting compressive strength causing failure of PMMA-based composites is about 90-95 MPa. An equation was derived that permits the prediction of the strength gain of polymer concretes as a function of the BP and DMA contents in the binder. refs.

Abstract
Biodegradable composites were prepared by addition of 1.5-3.0% of starch to a high-density polyethylene matrix containing glycerine as a plasticiser. During biodegradation of samples in soil, composites containing 5% or less of starch showed little change in tensile strength, whereas the elongation at break of specimens decreased by a factor of 1.5 to 4, showing that the brittleness of the specimens increased. Addition of starch accelerated the degradation of the polymer without markedly affecting its initial mechanical properties. 4 refs.

Abstract
The curing of acetone-formaldehyde resin (AFR) in an alkaline medium the presence and absence of various additives was examined by means of IR and NMR spectroscopy. The curing process can be controlled by the addition of an inexpensive carbamide-formaldehyde resin (CFR) to give materials that are useful as water-resistant sealants for use in sealing of oil wells. IR spectroscopic studies showed that AFR and CMR interact to form a hydrogen-bonded complex. 0 refs.

Abstract
The the effects of addition of maleinated low-molecular weight polybutadiene containing 0-20 wt.% of maleic acid groups on the melt index of poly(vinyl chloride) were examined by using a Brabender rotational plastograph. Addition of the maleinated oligobutadienes increased the thermal stability of unplasticised PVC. The effect was attributed to the combined effects of a reduction in the melt temperature, a reduction in the viscosity of the molten polymer, and scavenging by the carboxyl groups of the maleinated polymer of the hydrogen chloride released by thermal degradation of PVC. 3 refs.

Abstract
The relationships between the morphology, relaxation processes, and strength of blends of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and butadiene-acrylonitrile elastomer were examined to elucidate the nature of anomalies in the alpha-transition/temperature dependence of such blends. The relaxation properties were studied dynamically at a frequency of 10^-^2 Hz, and the temperature dependences of the loss tangent and dynamic elastic modulus were examined. The morphology of the blends can be represented by a model comprising three phases. Shifts in the alpha"1 and alpha"2 maxima along the temperature scale suggested that the components form true solutions in one another, and the presence of an intermediate maximum indicates the presence of a developed transfer layer. 11 refs.

Abstract
To elucidate the mechanism of formation of a thixotropic structure in solutions of a modified polyurethane, the structures and properties of polyurethane coatings with a range of compositions were examined. Coatings of polyurethanes prepared from polyesters and toluene diisocyanate or diphenylmethane diisocyanate showed an inhomogeneous globular supermolecular structure that was unaffected by blending with poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The PVC forms a strong rigid skeleton with a low crosslink density, and the polyurethane fills the cells in this skeleton. 4 refs.

Abstract
The effects of the topological properties of a filler phase on the acoustic properties of poly(vinyl chloride) or polyvinyl butyl (sic.) were examined by mathematical modelling. When the content of a highly dispersed filler exceeds a critical value, it is necessary to take into account the phase topology of the filler when determining the acoustic properties of the composite. 8 refs.

Abstract
A phthalocyanine group-containing oligomeric epoxy compound was prepared through the reaction of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether with the ammonium salt of a sulphonated tetracarboxylated copper phthalocyanine in the presence of caprylic acid as a modifier. The polymerisation reaction was performed in N-methylpyrrolidinone containing trihexylamine at 150 deg.C for 5 h or at 170 deg.C for 2 h. The product was compatible with a range of polymers, and was shown to improve the mechanical and adhesion properties of coatings based on oligomeric melamine-formaldehyde resin. 4 refs.

Abstract
Films consisting of poly(propylene glycol) containing various ratios of polyisocyanurates and polyurethanes were prepared with the aim of producing a material that displayed a high mechanical loss tangent over a wide temperature range. Both single-modulus and gradient films were obtained that showed good vibration-absorption properties over a wide range of working temperatures (-30 to +150 deg.C). 6 refs.

Abstract
The plane strain state of a hollow two-layer cylinder in which the material of each layer has different mechanical properties that are a continuous function of temperature was examined by means of mathematical modelling. It is assumed that the temperature field and the force loads change slowly with time, so that the problems of creep can be regarded as quasi-stationary. 4 refs.
