Abstract
Various methods of mixing styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and isoprene rubber (IR) with silica are investigated. SiO”2 is added to the individual rubbers then the rubbers compounded. Another method involves adding the entire amount of filler to one rubber then adding the second rubber. Mixtures are prepared at 60 and 140 deg.C with one series containing bis(alkoxypolysulphide silane). The vulcanisation, mechanical and dynamic properties are investigated. 8 refs. Abstract
A review of studies devoted to the investigation of the morphology of polypropylene and different classes of nucleating agents and suggested methods of their actions is presented. The use of special procedures makes it possible to produce different crystalline modifications of PP. The introduction of nucleating agents into PP leads to an increase in certain physicomechanical and optical characteristics and also leads to shortening of the processing cycle. It is necessary for the structure of the additive to satisfy an entire set of requirements. The structure of the nucleator mainly determines the properties of the nucleated PP. 41 refs. Abstract
The modification of vinyl chloride-polybutylvinyl ether by exchanging chlorine with sulphonic acid groups to produce materials which have potential as proton conducting membranes is discussed. A series of new copolymers is obtained. The paramagnetism of the insoluble polymer fractions is studied by ESR spectroscopy. The soluble fractions form transparent films and when doped with phosphoric acid exhibit reasonable proton conductivity. 15 refs. (Article translated from Plasticheskie Massy, No.1, 2007, p.20-23)

Abstract
The influence of a mixture of different mineral fillers on the physicomechanical and thermal properties of low density and spent polyethylene materials is reported. The tensile strength and microhardness of the composites can be improved by 40-50% although the elasticity may deteriorate. The influence of particle size and filler on the PE material is studied and the chemical composition is found to have a profound effect on strength and thermal stability. It is established that when a mixture of fillers is used a synergistic effect is observed leading to an improvement in the strength characteristics of the PE material. 9 refs. Abstract
The physicochemical properties of epoxy and triazine-containing polymeric active media for generating laser radiation are described. In particular the density, T"g, Young's modulus, thermal conductivity and specific heat are characterised. Issues such as the choice of polymer and laser dye, reduction of photodecomposition of the dye, lowering the level of thermo-optic effects and raising the threshold of occurrence of irreversible optical inhomogeneities in the activated polymers are addressed. 30 refs. Abstract
The glass transition temperature of crosslinked polyacrylate is determined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The change in structural properties are followed during cooling and heating using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidone-1-oxyl as a paramagnetic probe. The probe diffuses entirely in the intergrain layers and the dependence of the probe rotation is determined only by the viscosity of the interlayer and not by the volume expansion of the polymer as a whole. 4 refs. Abstract
The use of stabilised and unstabilised, plasticised and non-plasticised low density polyethylene homopolymer and copolymer based materials as suitable films for greenhouse coverings is discussed. The main properties that determine the effectiveness of film use include primarily the physicomechanical, optical and surface characteristics and the durability on exposure to light and heat. The proneness to form cracks in the near surface layer is an important ageing characteristic. The chemical and structural characterisation of these covering materials is reviewed. 24 refs.
