Abstract
The effects temperature, humidity, UV radiation and ozone on the ageing of car tyres were investigated and the appearance, Shore hardness and stress-strain properties of new tyres compared with those of used tyres. Tyres were weathered outdoors and also artificially aged and visually examined to reveal signs of cracking and colour differences. 7 refs. Abstract
The thermooxidative and photooxidative degradation behaviour of composites based on LDPE and various fillers (poly-3-hydroxybutyrate, soy flour, brewery dregs and cellulose) were investigated as a function of filler type and the thermophysical properties of the filled polymers determined by differential scanning calorimetry. Soy flour retarded oxidation, brewery dregs accelerated oxidation and cellulose and poly-3-hydroxybutrate had no effect on oxidation. 3 refs. Abstract
The heat stability of sulphonic acid ion-exchange fibres based on PP was investigated during heating in air and the effect of the nature of the cation on the heat stability of the fibres examined. It was found that the nature of cation exchange affected heat stability and that heat stability could be significantly improved by replacing alkaline and alkaline earth metals with H+ cations. 22 refs. Abstract
The preparation of beta-(4-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)propionic acid salts is described and the salts evaluated as heat stabilisers in vinyl chloride copolymers. The stabilised vinyl chloride copolymers exhibit increased thermooxidative stability when compared with those containing other known heat stabilisers. 4 refs. Abstract
Tetrachlorinated bicyclic compounds with carbonyl bridges obtained by diene condensation of tetrachlorobenzoquinone with ethylene and acetylene dienophiles were evaluated as modifiers for increasing the heat stability of epoxy resins. They were found to produce heat resistant and inflammable epoxy resins. The optimum amount of modifier was 20 parts per 100 parts epoxy resin. 8 refs.
