Abstract
The effects of fluorene containing modifiers of different molecular structures on the mechanical properties of glass filled epoxy resin composites was investigated by tensile testing of cured samples. It was shown that tensile properties were improved by addition of the modifiers, and that fluoroethers gave the most improvement in both tensile and elongational properties of the two evaluated. 11 refs.

Abstract
The effects of unmodified and surface modified titanium dioxide fillers on the cure characteristics of an epoxy resin were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry. It was reported that the addition of the surface modified titanium dioxide filler gave accelerated curing in the initial stages of the reaction compared to the unmodified titanium dioxide, and filled polymers had a higher glass transition temperature. 4 refs.

The pore size distribution in ribbed plates used as separators in electrical batteries (Miplast separators), and prepared from sintered emulsion polyvinyl chloride powders, was calculated from the knowledge of PVC particle size and packing density. The equations used were described, and differences in pore size distributions in plates of different strengths were indicated. 6 refs.

Abstract
The effects of component ratio in polymeric printing inks based on hydrolysed acrylic emulsions on the printing properties onto cotton fabric were investigated with respect to polymer concentration. Optimum concentration of acrylic emulsion with respect to colour intensity, unevenness of colouring and colour variation was determined. Fixing of colour occurred due to the formation of three dimensional structures of the composites of the dye on the fabric, and the strength of this fixation with respect to laundering, friction and biological resistance was considered. 4 refs.

Abstract
Stress relaxation measurements were carried out at different temperature on virgin and reprocessed samples of polypropylene obtained from packaging to examine and compare the mechanical durability of the reprocessed material to that of the virgin polymer. Polarised light microscopy was also used to examine crystallinity of samples from each material. It was shown that the reprocessed material could withstand greater mechanical stresses than the virgin material, due to a more ideal spherulitic structure, and could therefore be used for the synthesis of more rigid structures. 3 refs.

Abstract
The heat stability of a commercial nucleating agent (diparamethyldibenylidene sorbitol) (MDBS) and its effect on the heat stability of polypropylene composites was investigated by use of thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Samples were examined using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared, ultraviolet visible, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. Breakdown products were identified and chemical interactions between nucleating agent and antioxidants were confirmed. 20 refs.

Abstract
Nanocomposites of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and a commercial surface modified calcium carbonate were synthesised and characterised using scanning and transmission electron microscopies. Both plasticised and unplasticised PVC was used and it was observed that the presence of plasticiser promoted agglomeration in the filler, and in the unplasticised materials the average particle size decreased with an increase in milling temperature and in filler concentration. 15 refs.

Abstract
The properties of polyethylene crosslinked by acrylonitrile in the presence of tertiary butyl peroxide and tellurium were investigated with respect to tellurium content and time. Samples were characterised using tensile measurements, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, gel content measurements and assessment of light and heat ageing properties. It was observed that ageing resistance was significantly improved by the presence of the tellurium, and improvements were also found in the tensile properties of samples. 6 refs.

Abstract
Stress relaxation tests were carried out over a wide range of temperatures on samples of virgin and reprocessed polypropylene (PP). It was shown that reprocessed PP was significantly more rigid than the virgin PP. The relaxation behaviour was described in terms of relaxation nuclei and was modelled mathematically in terms of entropy and conversion of so-called relaxer units into non-relaxers. 5 refs.

Abstract
The influence of different plasticisers including dioctyl phthalate, and mixtures of plasticisers including chloroparaffin and EDOS (sic), on the heat ageing properties was investigated under different heat ageing conditions. Samples were examined according to their retention of tensile properties, by thermogravimetric analysis, and by changes in solution viscosity after ageing for various periods of time. Activation energies for ageing were calculated. It was shown that accelerated ageing at higher temperatures correlated reasonably well with ageing at lower temperatures, and was therefore valid for rapid sample testing. 6 refs.

Abstract
Synthesis of ultra-branched polyglycerines (polyethers) and their etherification by polypropylene glycol using a condensation reaction is described. Polymer structure was characterised using infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies, and elemental analysis with molecular weights determined using gel permeation chromatography. Fluorescence of polymer solutions was examined using fluorescence spectroscopy, and surface tension isotherms were plotted. Polymers were found to be surface active, and the length and nature of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic blocks was seen to influence critical micelle concentration. 14 refs.

Abstract
A method of monitoring the working life of aqueous polymer solutions, based only on nominal viscosity of the composition and measurements of the tensile properties of films formed from them, is described and discussed. The method was demonstrated on a solution of the sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose and on solution blends of this polymer with polyacrylamide. All tests were conducted at a constant temperature, as temperature can have a significant effect on results. The confidence level of predicted user life of the solutions is to within a single working shift. 11 refs.
