Abstract
The properties of rubber mixes and compounds based on SKTB siloxane rubber containing powdered halogen-free flame retardants, i.e. aluminium hydroxide, zinc borate, antimony trioxide, magnesium hydroxide, ammonium polyphosphate and melamine cyanurate. The properties studied were Mooney viscosity, millability, and physicomechanical properties. The results showed that the modified flame retardants (aluminium hydroxide, ammonium polyphosphate and melamine cyanurate) actively affected the thermooxidative degradation process of siloxane rubbers, increasing their ignition resistance and thereby retaining a satisfactory level of processing and physicomechanical properties. 4 refs. Abstract
Maleopimaric acid(MPA) was obtained by the Diels-Alder reaction of rosin with maleic anhydride or by interaction of abietic-type resinous acids in rosin with maleic anhydride. The ammonolysis of MPA led to the monoamide. MPA monoamide salts were introduced into rubber mixes based on SKI-3 polyisoprene rubber. The surface properties, Mooney viscosity, TS, EB and vulcanisation time of the mixes were studied. Comparison was made with a mix containing an industrial modifier, cobalt naphthenate. 8 refs. Abstract
The possibility of synthesising azomethines (adhesion promoters) in the polymer matrix during the vulcanisation of rubber mixes was investigated. It was demonstrated that the combined use of hexachloro-p-xylene and p-aminophenol in elastomer composites made it possible to eliminate modifier RU from the rubber mix formulations without adversely affecting rubber/nylon-6 cord bond strength and, at the same time, to increase the heat resistance of the vulcanisates. 8 refs. Abstract
A method and equipment were developed to record the change in the elastic modulus within the time of the impact process and to plot relaxation spectra of elastomeric materials, enabling additional information about the features of the test material to be obtained. The main elements of the test unit were a thermostatically-controlled chamber housing an indentor movement mechanism and a table for securing the material specimen. The indentor was given a certain pulse by a set of electromagnets creating magnetic fields accelerating or braking the indentor. It was shown that the given dependences could be plotted over a wide temperature range (-160 to 100 deg C) and that the results obtained could be used to predict the response of the materials to dynamic action and in the creation of new types of material. 9 refs. Abstract
Shock absorbers were subjected to accelerated ageing, the duration of which simulated an extended service period from 13 to 17 years. The shock absorbers were placed in a thermobaroclave, held at a temperature of about 90 deg C for 14.2 days, and then examined for surface defects and tested for fatigue, vibration strength, loading characteristics, rigidity, safety factor, and impact strength. The possibility of extending the service life of shock absorbers was confirmed by the results of the accelerated tests and a mathematical description of the lifetime characteristics of the shock absorbers was derived. 4 refs. Abstract
Theoretical aspects of the above are considered and a report is presented on the determination of the production regimes and size of the corresponding equipment for new articles and rubber mixes by experimental means using the calculated efficient values of the overall shear during milling, in the material cylinder channels and in the exit channel of the extrusion head, the sum of which gives the value of the overall shear for the entire process. The measuring devices created for producing mechanical rubber goods are shown to allow determination of efficient values of the overall shear in the roll gap, in screw channels and in forming channels of the extrusion head that correspond to the specified physicomechanical properties of the plasticised material and long-sized mechanical rubber goods. 4 refs. Abstract
A study was conducted to determine the conditions under which waste siloxane rubbers (hoses) were efficiently ground in a twin-screw extruder at elevated temperature by the elastic deformation method. Dicumyl peroxide and depolymerisate D-4, a mixture of dimethylcyclosiloxanes, were used as additives capable of increasing the efficiency of rubber grinding. The effect of temperature on the specific work of failure of waste siloxane rubber was examined in comparison with that of other rubbers. The particle size distribution of the ground waste siloxane rubber was investigated under different processing regimes and the surface morphology of particles of different size was examined. It was shown that for grinding of the waste rubber it was necessary to use a set of elements ensuring return of the material along the extruder cylinder and also to introduce an elasticity-reducing modifier into the rubber. 11 refs. Abstract
The reactivity of complexes of Lewis acids with tris(halogen)alkyl phosphates for the curing of ED-20 epoxy resin was studied and the physicomechanical properties of the cured epoxy composites were investigated. These complexes were found to be comparable with well-known acid curing agents in terms of activity. It was shown that an increase in the content of the complexes led to an increase in impact strength, TS and fire resistance. The epoxy compounds containing these complexes as replacements for expensive complexes of boron trifluoride with amines have potential for use as casting and adhesive composites. 3 refs. Abstract
The general features of the swelling in water, ethanol, HCl and KOH of photopolymer composites based on oligoester acrylates and epoxy resin, cured in the presence of the photoinitiator dimethylketalbenzyl, were studied and the influence of a filler, highly dispersed silica, on this process was investigated. The swelling of the composites appeared to involve the superposition of two processes, intense washing-out in the initial stage and gradual swelling in the next stage. Filling led to intensification of washing-out in the first stage and, in general, the proportion of sol fraction washed out increased with increase in filler concentration. The swelling parameters depended on the type of oligomer and amount of filler. 9 refs. (Article translated from Plast.Massy, No.2, 2008, p.33-36)

Abstract
Theoretical aspects of the long-term strength of polymers, which manifests itself in practice as the temperature and time dependence of strength(TTDS), are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the pole displacement effect, a deviation from Zhurkov's formulae in which the TTDS is described by a generalised formula known as the Regel'-Ratner formula. It is shown that the basic question of the presence or absence of pole displacement can be naturally solved by statistical methods. The use of multidimensional regression analysis is described. 5 refs. (Article translated from Plast.Massy, No.2, 2008, p.36-40)

Abstract
A procedure for the determination of the moulding cycle on an automatic thermoplastics moulding machine(ATPIMM) was developed. The procedure was divided into two different components, i.e. a theoretical calculated component which could be used by a skilled production engineer, and a practical component for constant use by the foreman of the section, by the setter-up of the ATPIMM, and even by the operator. Another method was based on determining the depth of indentation of the ejector into the surface of the part during its ejection from the mould cavity. Data used related to moulding of HDPE. 7 refs. Abstract
The possibility of using PETP waste materials in PU foam production was studied by preparing their solutions in acid and alkaline media at lower temperatures than usually used. The results obtained showed that the use of additions of acid and alkaline solutions of PETP waste materials to the polyester component in PU foam manufacture made it possible to control the rate of formation and increase the physicomechanical and thermophysical properties of PU foams. 10 refs. Abstract
Atactic PP(APP) and non-crystalline polymers of propylene, e.g. with ethylene and alpha-olefins, were shown to be reprocessable by extrusion moulding in the rubbery state. A working unit with a capacity of 300 kg/h was developed and manufactured for the reprocessing of APP. It was established that, after the reprocessing of APP by extrusion moulding, its main properties remained unchanged. The reprocessed APP contained 3-4 times fewer volatile impurities (water, heptane) compared with the initial polymer. A very small amount of oxidation of APP by air oxidation occurred during its reprocessing. 8 refs. (Article translated from Plast.Massy, No.2, 2008, p.46-48)

Abstract
A report is presented on a round-table meeting held in Russia in 2007 to discuss piping systems and the ecological safety of drinking water supply. The aim of the organisers was to contest the negative attitude of the engineering community to resolution No.70-1 (22 Feb.2006) of the Ecology Committee of the State Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation. The need for building of new pipelines and for emergency repair of existing pipelines is considered. Prospects for use of plastics pipes are examined. 12 refs.
