Abstract
Two complementary techniques (FTIR and DSC) were used to characterise blends of lubricants and to test them in situ in varnishes used in can coatings. The lids of beverage cans are coated with varnish before stamping. Since the metal undergoes considerable stress during stamping, the coefficient of friction of the crosslinked coating must be optimised. To this end, lubricants are used in the varnish. The lubricants used in this study were mixtures of carnauba wax, polyethylene wax and PTFE. The varnishes used were an epoxy resin and melamine co-formaldehyde. It was concluded that the precision, speed of sample preparation, and fast analysis made the FTIR, the technique of choice for testing lubricants in a crosslinkable varnish matrix. 7 refs.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the fibre surface treatment with aminosilane coupling agent on the rheological properties of short glass fibre reinforced PP, and of short glass fibre reinforced PP supplemented by maleic anhydride-modified PP. Rheological functions in the molten state were measured under steady state shear and oscillatory flow regimes. Results are discussed. 28 refs.

Abstract
The properties and characteristics of segmented polyurethane elastomers and polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) are described. In this work, PDMS monomer was incorporated into the soft segment of polyurethane using a stepwise reaction between at least two bifunctional compounds (4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, hydroxyl-terminated PDMS and 1,4-butanediol) to improve the thermal properties of a typical PU. The phase transition and degradation characteristics of the poly(urethane-siloxane) copolymers were studied using DSC and TGA. 32 refs.

Abstract
Changes were investigated in the morphology of medium and high molecular weight polyhydroxybutyrate blends (MMWT/HMWT PBB) during shearing, using various in-situ rheological methods. Four PHB blends of medium and high molecular weight species were investigated in order to establish a relationship between molecular weight, shear technique and morphology in PHB. On single shearing, fibres were formed only at the highest MMWT/HMWT ratio of 97/3. This was attributed to a critical orientation molecular weight. Fibre formation took place with all compositions, and there was a rapid initial shish formation on multiple shearing. This is claimed to be evidence for a partial shish based on the Janeschitz-Kriegl model. 21 refs.
