Abstract
Cotton fibre was subjected to heterogeneous surface acetylation with acetic anhydride in an oil bath at 130 degrees C using Na"2CO"3 as a catalyst to enhance reactivity. The effect of reaction time on fibre acetylation was investigated by determination of ester content of the acetylated fibres, ATR FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, static and dynamic contact angle measurements and field emission scanning electron microscopy. 26 refs.

Abstract
The suitability of oxalic acid as a crosslinking agent for PVAl was investigated. Curing was carried out at temperatures from 100 to 140 degrees C over a range of time periods and oxalic acid concentration was varied from 3 to 70 percent. Optimum curative dose and curing conditions were evaluated by systematic swelling measurements in hot and cold water. Crosslinked PVAl films were characterised by FTIR spectroscopy to identify the nature of functional groups therein and the heat stability and phase morphology of the films investigated. 28 refs.

Abstract
Polyaniline/As"2O"3 nanocomposites were synthesised by in-situ polymerisation in the presence of two initiators (potassium chromate and ammonium peroxodisulphate). Kinetics of polyaniline formation was followed by FTIR spectroscopy and the ratio of imino and amino units estimated and correlated with polyaniline structure. Polymerisation rates were determined by a gravimetric method and the heat stability, structure and electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites investigated by TGA, high resolution TEM and conductivity measurements, respectively. 36 refs.

Abstract
A novel superabsorbent composite from waste potato leaves, organophilic montmorillonite, acrylic acid and acrylamide was produced by microwave irradiation using potassium persulphate as polymerisation initiator and N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide as crosslinker. Polymerisation conditions were investigated by orthogonal tests and optimum reaction conditions established. The superabsorbent composite was characterised by FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and TGA and the effects of monomer to potato leaf ratio and montmorillonite content on composite water absorbency evaluated. 28 refs.

Abstract
A series of PDMS-containing elastomers was synthesised from MDI, 1,4-butanediol and PDMS by a one-step procedure and the thermal degradation behaviour and tensile properties of the elastomers investigated. Nanostructured fibre mats were electrospun from the PDMS-containing elastomers by electrospinning and the effects of solution concentration and voltage on the morphology of the fibre mats studied by scanning electron microscopy. 27 refs.

Abstract
A new variotherm injection moulding process in which electric heating and water cooling are used to dynamically change the temperature of the mould is reported. The feasibility and temperature response of the system are evaluated through numerical simulation and the simulation results used in the design of a mould for a 32-inch liquid crystal display panel. A variotherm injection moulding line is constructed to verify the simulation results and to examine the effect of the new variotherm injection moulding technology on part quality. 21 refs.

Abstract
The mechanical properties of epoxy composites reinforced with unfunctionalised silica nanospheres or silica nanospheres functionalised with amine or epoxy groups were investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis. The effect of silica content on the mechanical strength of the composites was examined and the mechanical properties of the composites containing the functionalised and unfunctionalised silica nanospheres compared. 35 refs.
